I’ve never worked at a restaurant and I’ve never worked a full-time job and a part-time job at the same time. Now that I’ve finished 3 weeks of working two jobs, I wanted to share some of the things I love about it.
1. Free and discounted pizza!!!
Every time I work, I get a free 6-inch pizza, breadsticks, salad, lasagna, spuds, sandwich or spaghetti. Because I’m afraid I will gain 300 pounds working at a pizza joint, I give my free pizza to G almost every night. One night a week, I get something for myself (and still give my free pizza to G). Last night, I got the above 6-inch pizza and cheesy breadsticks for the low price of $2.78!!!
2. I walk a lot.
After sitting on my fat tiny @ss for the last 10 years working in various office jobs, it’s really nice to have to walk around for a few hours every time I work. I recently started wearing a FitBit and when I only worked my full-time job, it would be difficult for me to hit 2,000 steps/day if I didn’t go to the gym. On Friday, I went to Zumba and then worked my pizza job for about 6 hours and walked over 20,000 steps!!! I’m exhausted when I get home, but it’s a good exhausted. And I sleep so much better now.
3. I’m not stressed out.
People have asked why I don’t just get a better paying full-time job. First, I’m not sure I can get a better paying job. Second, I’m not sure I can get a better paying job I won’t hate or that won’t stress me the f*ck out. And, honestly, I’d rather have two jobs I like (and that I’m good at), than one job I really f*cking hate. I learned a long time ago that I can’t do something I hate, no matter how much I am paid. And stress for me = hate. I don’t do well when I’m stressed out.
And being a pizza delivery driver is actually kind of fun. When I’m not delivering, I do dishes, make pizzas, take orders out to the restaurant and bus tables. It’s not difficult and the work varies. One day, I had to run to a party store and buy all the “Dora the Explorer” plates, napkins, hats, and cups they had in stock. The time goes by quickly and my coworkers are pretty funny. A lot of them are in high school and they think I’m old…like in my 20s!! I love that.
4. I’m so much more productive.
I work my full-time job Monday through Thursday, from 6:30 am to 5:30 pm. My usual schedule at the pizza parlor is Tuesday through Saturday for 24-30 hours per week, with longer shifts on Friday and Saturday. So my only day off is Sunday and I have no choice but to be efficient. I get more accomplished in that one day, than I did when I had Friday through Sunday off. Apparently, when I have a ton of time, I don’t do anything.
5. I’m happier…
Than I’ve been in months! I thought I might be p!ssed off that I’m working more or p!ssed off that I’m delivering pizzas. But no, I’m not. And I have a horrible track record working part-time jobs. Granted, I’d rather be travelling the world or sitting at home counting my millions, but that’s not going to happen. And just knowing that I’m chipping away at my mountain of student loan debt, I feel a little better each time I clock-in.
I’m not saying I love every single thing I do or that I’m so happy to clean the drains at the end of the night, but overall, I’m surprised at how much I enjoy working a part-time job, earning a little extra money and being physically exhausted at the end of the night.
You have a great attitude. I would be a raging bitch if I had to work full time and part time job. George should get a part time job so you can get rid of the debt faster. I have to work loser jobs because I put my hubby through school and did not finish my education. You are a much better person then me.
If it makes you feel any better, I’m still a raging bitch…but that has nothing to do with working two jobs! I’d like G to get a part-time job, maybe even working where I work…we’ll see. And it’s admirable that you put your husband through school, I hope he appreciates it!!
Good luck!! Happy to see you are back posting. Love to read your blog!!
